How has our experience been with our book groups?
Objective: Students will work collaboratively to produce posters and a presentation and reflectively assess our individual contributions to our groups. 1. We read independently for 20 minutes and and completed a reading log. 2. We worked with our book groups on a poster project & presentation assignment. 3. Each group presented their book project to the rest of the class. 4. We each reflected on our book group experience as we filled out this questionnaire. For next time: Bring headphones. Objective: Students will analyze a book-length story and visually represent its main ideas. 1. We read independently for 20 minutes and and completed a reading log. 2. We worked with our book groups on a poster project & presentation assignment. For next time: Bring anything needed to complete Book Group projects. What do we have to say about our reading books?
Objective: Students will participate in group discussions by contributing self-directed insights and actively listening to others. 1. We had a read-a-thon composed of three rounds of independent reading followed by three periods of group discussion (notes sheet attached here). For next time: No homework. How does the resolution of conflicts in stories create messages?
Objective: Students will Interpret the story implications of different resolutions to a conflict. 1. Writer's Notebook #39 2. We discussed how conflicts and their resolutions provide the message of a story by comparing two versions of "The Little Red Hen." 3. In small groups, we created three alternate versions of fairy tales and identified what message was shown by each of our versions. 4. We read independently for 20 minutes and and completed a reading log. 5. With our book groups, we identified a conflict in our book's story and brainstormed three possible outcomes of the conflict, identifying how each outcome would impact the overall theme of the story. Objective: Students will contribute productively to discussions within the framework of an organized discussion protocol. 1. We read independently for 20 minutes and and completed a reading log. 2. We shared thoughts about out book group reading using our completed discussion prep sheets. We practiced using 3 different discussion protocols to guide our conversations and took notes recording our progress. Finally, we each reflected on the discussion and our contribution to it.
