What is a vignette and how can we write one?
Objective: Students will be able to connect vignettes to bigger ideas and imitate model vignettes.
1. Word of the Day #11: ambivalent
2. Language Lab #8
3. We learned about the literary genre of vignettes in which small details and literary choices (including figurative language) paint a verbal picture.
4. Working together in small groups, we created an art gallery of pictures inspired by vignettes from The House on Mango Street. (Here is an example picture about "Cathy, Queen of Cats.") Each picture was accompanied by a caption summarizing the ideas of the vignette and an example of figurative language from the vignette.
5. Writer's Notebook #11
6. We discussed how to write vignettes in preparation for our upcoming book of vignettes assignment.
7. Individually, we annotated an essay named "Why Couldn't I Have Been Named Ashley" and answered a couple of questions about it.
For next time: Complete the brainstorming sheet for your book of vignettes. Come prepared for Vocab quiz #2.
