How does narrative give meaning to experience?
Objective: Students will explain the significance of stories in the lives of fictional characters and in their own lives.
1. We completed vocabulary cards for astute and censure.
2. Language Lab #23: Write two sentences that contain quotes from this paragraph. The first sentence should use ellipses to remove part of the quote; the other should use square brackets to add to or replace words in the quote.
3. We reviewed the requirements for the reading response paragraph assignment.
4. Several student took their turns leading the class in discussion about their reading response questions.
5. As a class, we discussed the place of storytelling in our lives and in the lives of people in transition (e.g., immigrants like those portrayed in My Ántonia).
6. We talked about how the meaning in stories often comes through conflict and reviewed the four basic types of conflict: PERSON vs PERSON, PERSON vs SELF, PERSON vs SOCIETY, and PERSON vs NATURE. We then drew questions for response assignment #3.
