How can we choose a focus for our character analysis papers?
Objective: Students will be able to compose a focused thesis statement presenting how character development contributes to a theme in a story.
1. Word of the Day #6: pertinacity
2. Language Lab #3: Write a story inspired by this picture. Circle all the verbs in your story. Choose one verb to change to a more exciting verb.
3. In small groups, we discussed our thoughts about Fahrenheit 451. Then, in a class discussion we focused on exploring the characters of Captain Beatty and Guy Montag.
4. We were introduced to our character analysis paper assignment.
5. Writer's Notebook # 7: We divided our page into 4 sections. In the top left corner, we brainstormed character changes in Fahrenheit 451. In the top right corner, we brainstormed character comparisons & contrasts in Fahrenheit 451. In the bottom left corner, we brainstormed themes in Fahrenheit 451.
6. We learned how to create a thesis for our character analysis paper by connecting a theme from the book with ideas about how characters in the book are developed.
7. We completed our entry for Writers Notebook #7 by using the bottom right corner of the page to brainstorm possible paper theses by connecting themes from the bottom left corner with ideas about characters from the top half of our page.
8: Exit slip: Pick your best thesis example and write it on your exit slip.
For next time: Read pages 130-158 of Fahrenheit 451 (finish the book). Decide on a thesis for your character analysis paper and commit to it on this planning sheet.
