Focus: What do we learn by paying attention to details early in a story?
Objective: Students will identify characteristics and implications shown by an author's use of details.
1. We learned that characterization is how authors show us the traits of a character. Characterization may be direct (ex: Scrooge is a mean and grumpy man.) or indirect (Scrooge kicked the dog, spat on the orphan, and said, "Bah, humbug!").
2. Writers Notebook #9
3. Independent reading and reading log.
4. Advisory conferences.
5. Writers Notebook #10
6. We discussed how when we begin a story it is important to pay attention to details that help us understand the characters and setting.
7. As a class, we read the first chapter of Seedfolks and annotated details that helped us understand Kim's character and the settings she visits.
8. We worked individually on a character & setting analysis worksheet for Seedfolks chapter 1.
Homework: Complete the worksheet for Seedfolks chapter 1.
