How do clues in stories help us compare characters and relationships?
Objective: Students will use textual evidence from a story to support their interpretation of characters.
1. Word of the Day #19: copious
2. Language Lab quiz
3. We read pages 6-12 of Speak and made inferences about the main character based on this character's speech, thoughts, actions, appearance, and interactions.
4. After reading p. 12, we each drew a "destiny word" and completed a brainstorming worksheet about our words.
5. In our notebooks, we began a list on page 20 to keep track of times our destiny words are mentioned in the novel.
6. As a class, we read p. 13-24 of Speak, discussing times that we noticed our destiny words or other symbols being used.
7. In small groups, we began creating posters to depict different supporting characters introduced in the first part of Speak. Each poster should refer to at least 5 pieces of textual evidence (including page number) to support the depiction. (Here is an example using Melinda, the main character.)
