How can I help readers follow my reasoning in an argument?
Objective: Students will compose a focused response to an article with a clear claim, reasons, and evidence.
1. Starter: Vocab list #5
2. We compared the use of cairns as trail markers to the use of "signpost sentences" in our writing. Both help others figure out our direction and stay oriented.
3. We discussed the placement of claims, reasons, and evidence in a standard argument paper.
4. We each read and annotated the article "GOP governors threaten to halt Syrian refugee resettlement in their states."
5. Working first individually and then in small groups, we worked to define and elaborate our individual positions on this issue by filling out the questions on the last page of the article.
6. We each wrote a three-paragraph argument about our issue. Paragraph 1 should be an introduction, giving background information and your claim. Paragraphs 2-3 should present reasons and evidence to support your claim in TEXT format. (Review of TEXT format: T=topic sentence, E=evidence, X=explanation, T=tie-up the ideas.)
7. We each submitted our writer's notebook for notebook checks.
For next time: No homework.
