Focus: How much do words matter?
Objective: Students will use note-taking to prepare for group discussions.
1. Independent reading.
2. Writers Notebook #33
3. We learned the difference between the denotation (the dictionary meaning of a word) and connotation (the meaning of a word plus its implications). We discussed how diction (word choice) shows tone (the attitude of the speaker towards a subject).
4. We read pages 35-46 of Speak, working in pairs to identify words in each chapter that create its tone.
5. We watched this video and discussed the power of words and names.
Homework: Bring your Writers Notebook for a notebook check (pages 27-33).
