How can I organize my writing to show multiple reasons for my position?
Objective: Students will compose a focused response to an article with a thesis and multiple supporting paragraphs.
1. We each chose one of three articles to read and annotate: Year Round vs. Traditional Schedule Schools, The Pros and Cons of Mandatory Gym Class in Public Schools, and Public School Uniforms: The Pros and Cons for Your Child.
2. We each individually decided what we thought about our chosen issue, presenting our position and 2 supporting reasons in the box following the article.
3. In small groups, we discussed our positions on the issues we had read and annotated.
4. We each wrote a three-paragraph argument about our issue. Paragraph 1 should be an introduction, giving background information and your claim (called a thesis statement when it is presented in the introduction of the paper). Paragraph 2 should be in TEXT format, with the topic sentence of the paragraph being your first supporting reason. Paragraph 2 should be in TEXT format, with the topic sentence of the paragraph being your second supporting reason. (Review of TEXT format: T=topic sentence, E=evidence, X=explanation, T=tie-up the ideas.)
5. Exit slip: Turn in your annotated article and response paper.
For next time: Remember your reading book.
