How can we grow as readers as we encounter the different voices in American literature?
Objective: Students will be able to a) reflect on their status as readers and set goals for individual progress and b) identify features of individual American voices.
1. Starter: Complete reading survey.
2. Set up our writer's notebooks and portfolios.
3. Complete an initial reading status report (notebook p. 81) and set a Term 1 reading goal.
4. Analyze the voice in a short narrative passage from an American author. Compare notes with a group of students who read the same passage; then share notes with a group of students who read different passages.
5. Exit slip: Recommend a book, explain why you would recommend it, and specify to whom you would recommend it.
For next time: Come prepared to present your Knight Shield.
