What is a frame story? How does the introduction of My Ántonia set up characters and settings?
Objective: Students will use textual evidence to support their interpretation of literature.
1. We completed vocabulary cards for aesthetic and ascetic.
2. We discussed the introduction to My Ántonia, learning how it serves as a frame story for the rest of the book.
3. In small groups, we discussed questions focused on how My Ántonia's introduction introduces settings and characters.
4. We reviewed the TEXT format for response paragraph development ( T=topic sentence, E=evidence, X=explanation, T=tie-up the ideas) and each small group wrote a paragraph using textual evidence to answer their question.
5. Each group shared their paragraph with the rest of the class.
6. We learned about our new response paragraph assignment and drew questions for the first reading assignment.
7. We checked out copies of My Antonia and received a reading schedule.
For next time: Read pages 5-23 of My Ántonia and complete the first reading response assignment.
