How did the American frontier impact culture & writing?
Objective: Students will 1) make reflective plans and goals and 2) use annotation to identify cultural themes in a piece of literature.
1. We played a game (In the Manner of the Adverb) to review our 1st-semester Word of the Day list.
2. We cleaned out and updated our writer's notebooks and binders.
3. On page 83 of our writer's notebook, we each completed a status report to help us be reflective about our efforts and goals as students.
4. We learned about the massive expansion of the United States during the 19th century.
5. WN #40: In our notebooks, we brainstormed inferences about the effect of 19th-century American expansion on the American people and culture.
6. We completed and discussed an opinion worksheet to prepare us to think about and recognize important themes in My Antonia.
For next time: Annotate the introduction to My Ántonia. Make note of 1) anything you find unclear or confusing, 2) any connections you see to ideas about the frontier or the themes of the novel which we discussed in class, and 3) anything else you want to say.
