How do characters fit into communities? How do communities impact characters?
Objective: Students will be able to identify implications of behavior and chart character relationships.
1. Word of the Day #7: allay
2. Language Lab #4
3. We watched this clip and learned the meaning of the following terms: imply (implication, implicit) and infer (inference, inferred).
4. Writer's Notebook #8: Imply/Infer. On the top half of your page, brainstorm things that you imply by your choices and behavior. On the bottom half of your page, brainstorm things that you are able to infer about others based on their choices and behavior.
5. We discussed how characters (both in stories and in real life) exist in communities rather than in isolation. The meaning we assign to characters often has much to do with their relationships.
6. We learned about sociograms and began creating one for the first few chapters of Seedfolks.
7. Working independently or in small groups, we read chapters 5-7 of Seedfolks and continued filling out our character analysis charts and our sociograms.
6. Exit slip: Let's play six degrees of separation. Who are you connected to by only 2 or 3 or 4 degrees?
For next time: No homework.
