How might Melinda's troubles relate to us?
Objective: Students will identify how conflicts in a story connect to universal ideas.
1. We reviewed the results of our writer's notebook checks and reflected on our progress in a status report (p. 82 of notebook).
2. In small groups, we finished creating posters to depict different supporting characters introduced in the first part of Speak. Each poster should refer to at least 5 pieces of textual evidence (including page number) to support the depiction. (Here is an example using Melinda, the main character.)
3. Each group presented their poster to help the class remember the different supporting characters.
A1 & A2
4. We read pages 26-35 of Speak, identifying and discussing conflicts presented in the story.
5. Writer's Notebook #21
6. We watched a short video that presents a powerful message on this theme and discussed how important it is to see beyond labels and treat others as fully human characters.
A3 & A4
4. Writer's Notebook #21
5. We read pages 26-41 of Speak, taking notes on "inner voice" recording sheets.
For next time: No homework.
